Pepper imported into the EU must comply with Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 on pesticide residues. Maximum residue levels (MRLs) are strictly enforced for pesticides such as triazophos, monocrotophos, and carbendazim.
Quality Standards
EU quality standards for pepper are defined by ISO standards for black pepper (ISO 959-1) and white pepper (ISO 1062). Key parameters include moisture content (max 13%), extraneous matter (max 1%), and specific grading based on density and size.
US FDA Requirements
Pepper imported into the US must comply with FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements. Foreign suppliers must register with FDA and comply with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP).
